Children in Hinduism

Brief information on children in a Hindu family is given here.

Also please read the essay on ‘Childhood’ under ‘Traditions and Customs’.

The basic building block of Hindu society is a joint or extended family with three or four generations living together under one roof. The women join and cook for the whole family; the men provide a pooled income. The elders take important decisions and offer guidance to the younger members. When women marry they usually join husband’s family. Even then they maintain good relationship with their family. The extended family provides considerable practical and emotional support to one another. In two generations earlier a male child will marry his father’s sister’s daughter or his mother’s brother’s daughter and that was so in order to keep the family fortunes within themselves. By this marriage not only fortunes were protected but also genetically transmitted diseases were also kept within the family! Having said this, today these children are adopting different views and do not want to be in an extended family situation and moving out of family home to be ‘independent’. Also they marry someone from outside their family.

Hindus love their children dearly and are very possessive about their children. They spend much of their time and energy to bring the children up in the best way possible. They teach them orthodox, religious and moral values so that they bring good name for the family. Hindus believe that children are products of their previous karma and gifts from God. Hindus believe in rebirth and looks at his life and other lives that preceded and succeeded him. Hindus do not approve childlessness and barren women are generally social outcasts so to say. Men and women in a childless marriage face lots of problems. For men it is a question of their virility and for women it is the stigma of being barren and not having the pleasure of being a mother. So much so newly married couples have to deal with lots of pressure from relatives and friends to produce a child soon after marriage.

Financially a male child is an asset. Socially he stands for the continuity of the family. Spiritually he helps his parents in their after life by performing funeral rites when they die. For these three reasons a son is preferred in the family as he will uphold the family values and ensures the family’s continuity. When there are two sons in the family then the elder son performs funeral rites for the father and the younger son does so for their mother. The obligatory duty of the sons is to look after the parents in their old age and perform funeral rites when they die.

Female children are excluded from performing funeral rites and even not allowed to visit cremation grounds. If in any family there are many female children, they are considered to be great burden financially as the parents will have to pay large dowries to get them married and they have no right to inheritance. After marriage the female child normally moves out with the newly married husband.
