Thai Pongal

Thai Pongal is a harvest festival – the Tamil equivalent of Thanksgiving held in honour of the Sun for a bountiful harvest.
Thai Pongal is celebrated on the first day of the month Thai (January) of the Tamil calendar. This day normally falls between 12th and 15th of the month of January in the Christian calendar. Thai Pongal is mainly celebrated to convey appreciation to the Sun God for providing the energy for agriculture - essential for all living beings in the world.

Thai is the first month of the Tamil Almanac, and Pongal is a dish of cooked sweet mixture of rice, green gram (moong dhal), jaggery and milk. This festival is celebrated by all Tamils as it is not relevant to any particular religious faith. The whole Tamil population of the world celebrate it without any difference.

Overall, it is a festival to encourage social cohesiveness and unite people by bringing them together in a common function.
Thai Pongal is an occasion for family re-unions and get-together. Old enmities, personal animosities and rivalries are forgotten. Estrangements are healed and reconciliation effected.

Thai Pongal is a festival of freedom, peace, unity and compassion. Thus, love and peace are the central theme of Thai Pongal.
Therefore it is widely known as the "Festival of the Tamils".

There is much excitement and preparation days prior to the Pongal day. The homes and surroundings are cleaned and any old things in and around the house are got rid of. New clothes are made or bought and tasty sweet snacks are made for the day. A new clay pot and a suitable wooden spoon are bought and also freshly harvested hand pounded rice is made available. The front garden area where pongal will take place will be prepared with the three bricks for the hearth and necessary firewood placed nearby.

In the morning of the day of Pongal, everyone bathes and wears their new clothes. Family members get together and draw on the floor, the decoration (kolam) – a geometrically drawn curves and lines in various patterns - which defines the sacred area where pongal is to take place. Traditionally “Kolam” (also known as RANGOLI in the North of India) is drawn in front of the house and the Pongal is set up in direct view of the sun (East). A fire wood hearth will be set up using three bricks.

A senior member of the family conducts the ceremony while others assist him. The cooking begins by placing a clay pot on the hearth. The neck of the clay pot is tied round with mango, ginger and turmeric leaves. The pot is filled with water and milk and fire is lit. When milk starts to bubble and overflows out of the vessel, three handfuls of freshly harvested rice grains are added to the pot. This is also timed in such a way that sun rises at this time when the rice boils and overflows. When this happens towards the Sun it is assumed to be auspicious.

In the Tamil language the word Pongal means "overflowing," signifying abundance and prosperity. This is a time for everyone at home to celebrate with crackers, music and they recite the words like ‘Pongalo pongal’, "Thai Pirandhal Vazhi Pirakkum" ("the commencement of Thai – (the period between mid-January to mid-February) paves the way for new opportunities" like marriage. When the rice is cooked the other ingredients like roasted moong dhal, jaggary, sugar candy, raisins, cashew nuts, ghee and cardamoms are added.

When the pongal (cooking of rice) is completed, it is offered on a banana leaves laid within the sacred area, a portion of the pongal is served to each leaf, with a skinned banana, on top of the sweet rice. Then other already made sweet snacks, other fruits are served up on each leaf. Nirai Kudam (a special earthen, brass or stainless steel pot carrying a coconut with the tail end pointing upwards and mango leaves in between the coconut and the vessel) and oil lamp are also placed in the appropriate places with camphor and incense sticks lit up. Family members join together in prayers and meditation and pray to God for a bright New Year and prosperity.

After the prayers are over, the senior member of the gathering is served the first portion of the offerings and others share the rest. Also portions are distributed to neighbours and friends.

The bulls and cows play a vital role in the paddy fields and in other farm products, are also served their portions as thanks giving and is called Maaddu Pongal This is celebrated on the following day.

Maaddu Pongal

Maaddu Pongal is celebrated on the day after Thai Pongal. Tamils regard cattle as a source of wealth for providing dairy produce, manure and labour for ploughing and transport. Therefore Tamils celebrate this day as a respect and Thanksgiving to the helpful cattle. Their cattle are given a well deserved rest on this day and are given pride of place.

. On this day people bathe their cattle and decorate them with garlands, apply Kunkumam to their foreheads and horns. Like on Pongal day hearth is lit near the cattle shed and in a pot some rice is cooked with jaggery and honey. Just like the Padayal on Pongal day, Padayal is made and prayers are said. Then the animals are fed with this sweet rice along with bananas and other fruits. This is a special day for the cattle and so they are fed first and the people in the house share the rest of the rice.

The day ends with bullock cart race in the evening but in Tamil Nadu, India there is Jallikattu which is bull taming game. This does not happen in Jaffna.

Thai Poosam

Thai Poosam is a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community in the Tamil month Thai on the day of the star Poosam, around Full Moon (Paurnami or Pooranai). It is mainly observed in countries where there is a significant presence of Tamil community.

The word Thai Poosam is a combination of the name of the month, Thai, and the name of the star, Poosam. This particular star is at its highest point during the festival. The festival commemorates the occasion when Parvathi gave her son Lord Muruga a spear (Vel) so he could vanquish the evil demon Tharakasuran. The motive of Thai Poosam festival is to pray to God to receive his grace so that bad traits are destroyed. Hence Thai Poosam is a celebration of the victory of good over evil… that is to destroy our evil characters with good deeds.

The unique character of the Thai Poosam is the parade of people bearing Kavadis. Kavadi is a wooden or bamboo structure covered with cloth and decorated with feathers of peacock which is the vehicle of Lord Murugan. This is carried by devotees on their shoulders to various Murugan temples. To mark this day of penance and thanksgiving, some Hindus pierce their body with metal skewers while carrying Kavadi or pots of milk on their heads.

It is a belief that Thai Poosam is the day of Creation of this world.

The Legend:

There were battles between the Asuras and Devas. Devas were defeated several times by the Asuras. The Devas being unable to resist, approached and surrendered to Lord Shiva and prayed to give them a leader to win over the Asuras. Shiva granted their request by creating the mighty warrior, Skanda, out of his own power and given the job of destroying the Asuras. Lord Muruga set off with the blessings of his parents to destroy the demon. He took with him twelve weapons, eleven of which were given by his father Lord Shiva and the 'Vel' given by his mother Parvathi. Lord Muruga destroyed Tharakasuran on the Poosam day in the Tamil month of Thai and hence Thai Poosam is celebrated in all Murugan temples.

Thai Poosam in Eelam:

In Eelam the first new paddy harvest occurs on the Thai Poosam day. It is a day celebrated in respect of Lord Muruga. People get up in the morning and clean the house and surroundings. Then the males in the house collect some sickle to cut paddy plants, coconut, camphor and other things and go to the paddy fields. While breaking the coconut by one person the other cuts and collects bunch of paddy plants following a thanks giving prayer to the Sun and bring them home.

Some of it is cleaned free of husk and mixed with milk and pieces of bananas and everyone in the household share this mixture. The balance of rice is cooked and eaten at lunch on that day. Some go to the nearest Murugan temple and as a penance and thanksgiving carry Kavadi and milk pots.
