Karainagar Sivan Kovil (Temple)

Sri Sunthareswarar Kovil that is celebrated as EELATHTHU CHITHAMBARAM is situated about ten miles from Jaffna in the northwest direction, in the Thinnapuram region. Festivals at this temple are conducted the same way as in Chithambaram in South India; hence this Thinnapuram Sivan Temple is also called Eelaththu Chithambaram. Thiruvachakam is closely connected with Thillai Natarajar. Similarly in Eelaththu Chithambaram there are fifty one holy lamps around Natarajar statue. These fifty one lamps remind us the fifty one compositions of the Holy book, Thiruvachakam.

This temple was built sometime during mid nineteenth century. The main deity Shiva in Eelaththu Chithambaram is named Sunthareswarar and the Ambikai as Sountharambikai. The deity Ayyanar in this temple has a very ancient history and fame. This temple was initially called Aandy Keni Ayyanar Kovil. Devotee Ambalavi Murugar who built the Ayyanar Temple was also responsible for the establishment of the Shiva temple, later on. Epics reveal that Shiva himself appeared in this devotee’s dreams and guided him to the choice of Shiva Linga of the Sanctum Sanctorum of this temple.

The sub deities of this Shiva temple are Ambal, Natesar, Chandrasegarar, Somaskandar, Vinayagar, Subramanyar and Sandeswarar. There are also statues of religious Saints. Equal importance is given for both Ayyanar and Shiva of this temple. Also, the main towers and Décor Carts are also made in a similar way. The two towers of this temple appear first as one approach the temple, with Ayyanar entrance on the left and Shiva entrance on the right. Tradition dictates worship of Shiva follows that of Ayyanar, entering through the Ayyanar entrance. There are great connections between the fiqure two and the temple and they are two main towers, two main deities, two trustees and two annual festival series for this temple. This temple is one of the few temples in Elam conducting the Five Cart festival.
Even though deities Sunthareswarar – Sountharambikai fills the hearts of the people of Karainagar where this temple is situated, their true love is to the Aandy Keni Ayyanar of this temple. The temple is maintained in the traditions of its initiator Ambalavi Murugar. This is one of the very few temples maintained by the traditional administrator.

Important festivals in this temple:

The most important and famous festival is the Thiruvenpavai in the month of December. Here Natarajar’s chariot procession and the consecration in the early hours next day are not to be missed. On the day of the consecration evening it is the holy marriage ceremony.

In the month of March there are another ten days of festival for Lord Siva when on the auspicious day of ‘Panguni Uththaram’ the cart festival takes place. In the month of July another ten days of festivals for Ambal which completes with the cart festival on the auspicious day of ‘Aadi Puuram’. Apart from these festivals, other festivals that are celebrated there are Thai Poosam, Masi Maham,Aavani Sathurthi, Navarathiri, Karthikai Theepam and few more.
