Tamil Hindu New Year – Puththandu

Puththandu marks the Tamil New Year’s Day and is celebrated on the first day of Chithirai - the first month in the Tamil Calendar year by Tamils around the world. The auspicious occasion of Puththandu is also popularly known as Varusha Pirappu or the birth of New Year

The Hindus celebrate the New Year by observing the traditions and rituals practised by ancestors over the years. Homes and surroundings are cleaned and made ready prior to the event. On the day of the Puththandu, during the auspicious time, Maruththu Neer which is clean water boiled with various herbs, selected flowers and leaves, milk, saffron and other ingredients is made by the priests in temples. This Maruththu Neer is obtained by the people from the temples and applied on the heads of all family members prior to bathing. New clothes according to the colours mentioned in the almanac are worn. A Pongal, sweet rice is made with new raw red rice, jaggery, cashew nuts, ghee, plums and milk.

The area in front of the house is previously cleaned. This area is now sprinkled with turmeric water. A decorative design 'Kolam' is drawn using raw white rice flour. The hearth is made facing the East within the Kolam area, and a new pot is used to cook the 'Pongal'. Nirai Kudam and Kuththu Vizakku are also placed appropriately. When the Pongal is ready, Padayal which is a portion of Pongal placed on a banana leaf is offered to Sun God along with various fruits including bananas and flowers. A coconut is broken by the head of the household, incense is burnt and camphor is lit. The portion of the Padayal is shared between those present. The elders in the family bless the children, who worship them and seek their blessings and good wishes. This is done under the belief that a good start to New Year will ensure prosperity and happiness in the coming year. This is followed by the whole family visiting to the temple for prayers and take part in special functions. This is followed by the traditional practice of the first financial transaction known as the 'Kaivishesham' where elders exchange money between themselves and gift money to their children as a token of good luck. If there are employees they also benefit from this Kaivishesham. Customarily alms should be offered to the poor.

The members of the farming community go to their farms and plough a small portion of land and this becomes the traditional act on New Year's Day. Likewise, a teacher would start a lesson, a trader starts a new account and a craftsman starts his craft and so on.
The family members exchange visits to their relatives on auspicious times. Visiting relatives and entertaining relatives and friends are also important features of the New Year celebrations. Sweets and Palakarams made previously for this occasion are served to visiting relatives and friends.

Many games are played like Porthengai – a war of coconuts, Maaddu chavari (Bullock races), and cart races. People greet each other by saying Puththandu Vazhththukkazh and similar phrases. Swings are constructed for the children who enjoy playing on these all day long.

Chithira Paurnami – Chithira Paruvam

Chithira Paurnami is observed on the full moon day in the month of Chithirai corresponding to the English months of April-May.
Chithira Paurnami is a day sacred to Chitra Gupta, the assistant to Yama Rajan and is the Keeper of Deeds. It is believed that Chitra Gupta examines the good and the bad performances of each individual and when that person dies Chitra Gupta tallies the deeds and reports to Yama Rajan for a final decision on the soul of the person.

On Chitra Paurnami day, special poojas are conducted at the temples and people bathe in holy rivers and temple ponds to wash away the sins committed and to pave a better way for life beyond. It is believed that if people would keep fasting and by offering food to the poor and the needy on this day they would receive the blessings from the Almighty directly and the karma within themselves would be removed.

In Yarlpanam the sons of deceased mothers observe Chitra Paurnami as an auspicious day and fast in memory of their mother.
