Navarathri is a period of nine nights (days) – Highly auspicious for the worship of Sakthi (Durga) – The Supreme (Divine) Energy. Divine Energy or Sakthi is worshiped in different forms.

The celebrations vary in different parts of India but in South India and Sri Lanka Goddess where, during the first three days the Divine Mother is worshiped as Durga (for Strength), next three days as Lakshmi (for wealth or prosperity) and the last three as Saraswathi (Knowledge or enlightenment)

Significance: Aim of human life is to attain Divinity through various methods. Navarathri symbolises this.

Step1 (first three days): Get rid of the countless negative (Asura) qualities like anger, jealousy etc. – destroying these is a struggle and is symbolised as Durga worship.
Step2: The second three days is devoted to the cultivation and development of auspicious qualities - wealth - by worshiping the wealth-giving aspect of the Divine - Lakshmi.
Step3: The last three days – The devotee becomes competent to receive the supreme wisdom and this is achieved through the worship of the Divine knowledge personified – Saraswathi. Prayers are conducted placing all varieties of materials (books by students, equipments used during the course of one’s profession meaning Aayutha in Tamil) that provide livelihood for the members of the family.

The final day (10th) is celebration of victory of achievements - symbolised by the killing of the Asura with different heads (that represents destruction of demon – Soora Samharam. The demon (Asura) was supposed to have hidden in a tree called Vanni which is very hard to cut and hence Plantain tree is used to symbolise the killing of the demon by the Divine Arrow ((Maa Ambu or Maanampoo in Tamil)

On this day of Vijayadashami (Vijaya- Victory, Dashami – tenth day) - All good things in life sprout – like beginning to learn alphabets (Edu thuvakkal)

GOLU: A custom of arranging dolls of various gods, incarnations, living beings – animals and plant forms - on a stepwise manner. This symbolises the oneness of the Supreme Energy (Sakthi) - as also agreed by current scientific theory - in the universe and reminding us to treat all beings – living and non living with due respect and honour.
