Karthikai Theepam – கார்த்திகை தீபம்

Karthikai Theepam

Karthikai Theepam or Karthikai Vizhkkeedu is Tamil Hindu festival of lights observed in Tamil homes and temples in the month of Karthikai (mid November – mid December) in the Tamil Hindu calendar on the full moon day and when the star is Karthikai. It is essentially a festival of lights and hence rows of oil lamps are lit in every home. The lighted lamp is believed to ward off evil forces and usher in prosperity and joy and therefore this day is considered to be auspicious.

In Yarlpanam houses are cleaned and Kolam is drawn in front of the house. Oil lamps are placed inside the Kolam and in front of the house at the gates. More lamps are lit in different places of the house, all around the house and in front of all buildings big and small in the compound. The lamps are arranged near the doors and windows and on the balconies. The whole street will be lit up by these lamps in every home.

The legend:

Once Brahma and Vishnu started arguing as to who is the greatest. At that time Lord Siva appeared in the form of fire in front of them and told them whoever finds the top or bottom of the fire is the greatest. Brahma took the form of Annam and tried to find the top while Vishnu took the form of Varahan and tried to find the bottom. Since God has no limit in the size both could not see either top or bottom of the fire. When their ego subsided, they both prayed when He appeared in front of them as a pillar of fire and this day is celebrated as Karthikai Theepam.

கார்த்திகை தீபம் (கார்த்திகை விளக்கீடு)

கார்த்திகை விளக்கீடு கார்த்திகை மாதத்தில் பறுவத்திலன்று தமிழ் இந்துக்களால் வீடுகளிலும் கோவில்களிலும் கொண்டாடப்படும் ஒரு தினமாகும். இது முக்கியமாக தீபத் திருநாளாகையால் ஒவ்வொரு வீடுகளிலும் எண்ணை விளக்குகள் ஏத்தப்படும். ஏத்திய விளக்குகள் தீண்டத்தகாதவையை போக்கி செழிப்பு வாழ்வையும் சந்தோசத்தையும் கொண்டு வருவதாய் ஒரு நம்பிக்கை. இதன் நிமித்தம் இத்தினம் சுப தினமாக கருதப்படுகிறது.

யாழ்ப்பாணத்தில் வீடுகளும் சுற்றாடல்களும் சுத்தம் செய்து வீட்டுக்கு முன்னால் கோலம் போடுவார்கள். அக்கோலத்தினுள்ளும் வீட்டைச் சுற்றி மற்றைய இடங்களிலும் தீபம் ஏற்றி வீட்டை சுற்றியுள்ள சிறு கட்டிடங்கள் கொட்டில்கள் ஆகியவற்றிற்கு முன்னும் தீபம் ஏற்றப்படும். அதோடு மட்டுமல்லாது வீட்டின் யன்னல்கள் கதவுகள் ஆகியவற்றிற்கு முன்பாகவும் தீபம் ஏற்றப்படும். இந்த வீடுகளில் எரியும் தீபத்தினால் தெரு முழுவதும் வெளிச்சமாக இருக்கும்.

புராணக்கதை:
ஒரு தடவை பிரம்மாவும் விஷ்ணுவும் யார் பெரியவர் என்ற விவாதத்தில் ஈடுபட்டனர். அப்பொழுது சிவபிரான் அவர்கள் முன் அக்கினியாக தோன்றி இந்த அக்கினி கொழுந்தின் நுனி அல்லது அடியைக் காண்பவர் தான் பெரியவர் என்று கூறினார். பிரம்மா அன்னப் பறவையாக தோன்றி நுனியை தேடிப் போக விஷ்ணு வராகன் என்ற பன்றி உருவத்தில் தோன்றி அடியைத் தேடிப்போனார். இருவரும் தோல்வியடைந்த பின்னர் அவர்களின் ஆணவமும் அடங்கி விட்டது. அதன் பின்னர் அவர்கள் முன் சிவபிரான் அக்கினித் தூண் போல் தோன்றினார். இத்தினத்தை தான் கார்த்திகை தீபமாக கொண்டாடுகிறார்கள்.
